OUR CHAMBER IS
BLACK HISTORY

Black-owned businesses have long played a pivotal role in the social and economic fabric of America. During the Civil Rights Movement, these businesses were not just centers of commerce but were crucial in supporting the fight for equality and justice. Many Black-owned businesses provided financial support to civil rights organizations, helping fund activities such as protests, sit-ins, and legal battles. These businesses offered jobs to African American individuals at a time when discrimination limited their employment opportunities elsewhere, helping to sustain families and communities.

Chamber History

Following the historic March for Justice in June 2020, hosted by Victoria Jones nonprofit Forever Our Home, Jones established the Space Coast Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (SCBCC) on June 19, 2020. She enlisted Amber Baker from her previous nonprofit as the Chamber's Vice President. In August 2020, the Chamber convened its inaugural board of directors meeting at Q’s Crackin’ Crab & Seafood Kitchen in Cocoa Beach, composed of diverse leaders from across Brevard County.

Throughout its formative year in 2021, the Chamber focused on establishing its legal framework, thus experiencing nominal growth. In its second year, the Chamber introduced its hallmark Back to Business Networking event throughout 2022. The Chamber President then envisioned providing a platform to celebrate black professionals by creating the Launching Black Excellence Awards, recognizing outstanding organizations and businesses throughout Brevard, alongside iconic local figures. The Chamber hosted its inaugural awards gala in August 2022.

During it’s second year, the Chamber collaborated with Spectrum to provide complimentary commercials on News 13 for five black-owned businesses on the Space Coast. Notably, in 2023, the Chamber led its first delegation of black leaders to advocate for Brevard's black-owned businesses at Black Chamber Day at the Capitol, organized by the Florida Association of Black Chambers of Commerce.

In early 2023, the Space Coast Black Chamber of Commerce became members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce, in essence signaled a promising start in collaboration among the organizations. The Chamber’s President, Victoria Jones engaged in discussions with the newly established Office of Cybersecurity under the Trump-Pence administration, following a special request from the White House in collaboration with the U.S. Chambers in 2023.

The Chamber's founder also received the prestigious 4 under 40 award in 2023 from LEAD Brevard for her instrumental role in fostering economic opportunities for underserved businesses on the Space Coast.

Subsequently, the Chamber hosted its inaugural legislative conference, State of the Coast, in June 2023 at the Eastern Florida State College Student Union Hall in Melbourne. Furthermore, the Chamber President was also among 80 black leaders invited to the White House in July 2023 to engage with President Joe Biden on matters concerning black businesses in America.

The Chamber’s second gala was held in August 2023, coinciding with National Black Business month, the Chamber recognized distinguished leaders from across Brevard. Noteworthy was the swearing-in of the Chamber's board of directors and President by former State Attorney Andrew Bain, who was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Despite internal restructuring, the Chamber continued its operations into 2024, enhancing member engagement through innovative strategies.

Participating in Brevard Day alongside other key area Chambers, the Space Coast Black Chamber of Commerce embarked on its second visit to Tallahassee in February 2024 for Black Chamber Day at the Capitol. The Chamber’s first legislative agenda was presented to state lawmakers who represented Brevard. In May 2024, the Chamber's President & CEO represented the organization at the Southern Economic Roundtable trip to Washington DC, aligning with other black Chambers and businesses from the southeastern region of the United States.

As the Chamber anticipates its fourth anniversary, it remains dedicated to serving the business community on the Space Coast with a commitment to continued growth and promotion of black excellence. The Chamber's efforts have not only fostered economic growth but also significantly enhanced community cohesion. The Chamber is focused on expanding membership benefits, increasing advocacy efforts, and launching new initiatives aimed at youth entrepreneurship.

Recognizing the importance of cultivating the next generation of business leaders, the Chamber introduced its free student membership in partnership with local schools and universities.

The Chamber's events calendar now includes a series of workshops on financial literacy, digital marketing, and leadership skills, tailored to meet the needs of our diverse membership base. Additionally, the Chamber has strengthened its collaboration with local government agencies to ensure that the voices of black entrepreneurs are heard in policy-making processes.

Looking ahead, the Chamber is committed to leveraging technology to better serve its members. Plans are underway to launch a mobile app that will provide real-time updates on events, resources, and networking opportunities. This digital platform aims to create a more connected and informed business community.

Victoria Jones, reflecting on the journey thus far, expressed her gratitude and optimism. "We have achieved remarkable milestones thanks to the unwavering support of our members and partners. As we move forward, our focus remains on creating sustainable growth and fostering an inclusive business environment where everyone can thrive."

With its eyes set on the future, the Space Coast Black Chamber of Commerce continues to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change in Brevard County and beyond.
